Apple Rose by @hannahglowe 💗

You will need:
2-3 apples
1 lemon
Water
Cinnamon
Jam of your choice
Vegan Puff pastry sheets
Note: this Apple Rose technique is easier to follow via video, I recommend searching on Youtube "How to make Apple Roses" to ensure you clearly understand the steps.
Firstly you will need to cut your apples in half (removing the core) and then slice thinly to create the apple rose petals. Place the apples in a bowl of water (filled almost to the top of the apples) and one lemon. Place in microwave for 2-3 minutes. Drain the water from the bowl and leave the apply to cool for a few minutes.
Get your puff pastry ready. Use a roller to stretch it out. Cut it into a width double the size of the sliced apple. Place your jam on the puff pastry slices. On one half of the puff pastry place your apple slices. You can have them slightly overlapping or not touching. Sprinkle slices with a little cinnamon. Fold the puff pastry in half and begin rolling with hands. Place roses in a muffin tin and in an oven on 180 degrees celsius for 30-40 minutes. Leave to cool and top with icing sugar.

Recipe for easy home-made jam:
Using frozen berries, defrost a cup in the microwave. Place in food processor for a few seconds. Put berries into a pot on medium temperature with 2 tbsp of chia seeds. Watch and stir for 5-7 minutes until the thickness desired is reached.

Ever since I was a kid, I heard WW2 stories from relatives involved and the elders in the small-town community I grew up in. A historical occurrence built on tragedy. But there were these subtleties, a war so devastating that brought communities together like never before. Accentuating freedoms and inspiring art in new ways.
In my constant struggle between supporting happiness and dealing with depression, I often think about how we try to portray things in the world. Not just using media but how we wear emotions on our sleeves.
I first heard of WW2 photographers, medics and journalists in the fifth grade from a teacher who believed peace was the best thing to stand for. These people often untargeted on the front lines of the battlefield, left to carry stories back to the rightful side under codes of war. Grasped by their role, I began to buy cameras out of the dollar basket at Goodwill. I would save up to spend 12 dollars on a leather covered broken Kodak that seemed priceless to me. What stories had it told? Who held it? I wanted nothing more than to continue to tell the stories of these unknown. There's nothing more heart wrenching to me than tools being tossed aside because they are inconvenient or outdated.
Now at 23, I own some of the same gear those medics used on the front lines, cameras used by WW2 journalists, gloves from bomber pilots, things that still to this day have use. Nearly all of my cameras work, and are used to carry the torch they first lit.
That during these complicated times, these tools can still create beautiful things. And for that, I am thankful.

After 4 months without a constant place to call home I'm finally so blessed to say I've found a little wood-floored house on the outskirts of Portland.
One thing that's true to a growing majority of our generation is our ability to work hard and make a life for ourselves. I remember being so nervous as a kid, that I'd never be able to have a place to call my own, that I might not ever be able to afford it. But now I've worked hard enough and I'm super happy to share that one of the first things I'll be buying is a real bed. An actual mattress! It's such a child-like excitement I have to create a space for myself but more importantly for friends and strangers to feel welcomed in. I love hosting people and making others feel loved, seriously it's one of the best most satisfying feelings in my life to see to it that others are cared for.

So now I'm looking over the Manhattan skyline trough a series of rainy windows, listening to Ólafur Arnolds and my pencil is pressed to the paper. I'm thinking of all the years it took to get here and all the years I (hopefully) have left still to see a rise and fall of challenges and success in my life. This house might not be permanent, it might change, I might move, any number of things could happen - but for right now it's home.
I return to Oregon the day after tomorrow to a small little refreshing get together in the woods with several rolls of film and dear friends.
I'm excited.
